Synopsis

Mary is a lonely, small-town, grocery store worker, living a quite boring life. On the eve of her 50th birthday, her senses and imagination suddenly come alive in order to break free once and for all. Mary’s life soon begins to take on a totally unexpected turn for the better – becoming an awesome revelation. A sexy and vibrant black comedy drama about an erotic awakening.

Intentions

I grew up at the opera. My earliest memories are those of running around behind the scenes, barely differentiating between reality and theatrical illusion. In MARYGOROUND my intention is to create a non-realistic film. A story suspended between reality and my main character’s (Mary’s) imagination. We are to perceive the world from the perspective of a woman, who on reaching menopause endures the effects of her hormonal treatment. My story is not only a black comedy about misguided desire, it also carries a message about femininity, about the process of ageing and morphing based on feelings and individual exploration. The story of Mary is in fact a parable. The main conflict between what Romans called “vita contemplative” (contemplative life) and “vita active” (active life) is connected with female sexuality. My character is challenged and seduced by the outside world. she must experience dark and sensual things to finally become a complete person, be herself.
