Le Continent Noir

Sélection Annuelle 2011

Marthe, 17, returns for three months to Saint-Esprit, her native island, to perform community service. Toxic, festering algae have invaded the coasts. Animals are dying, the water is contaminated, and the inhabitants are ruined. Only about a hundred people still live there. Among them is Jean, the island’s police officer and Marthe’s older brother. A tyrannical and manipulative psychopath, he is about to become a father and husband and is trying to appear normal. The return of his younger sister, along with the presence of Andreas, a mysterious stranger who has come to live on the island, upturns everything. A storm is approaching. Saint-Esprit becomes isolated from the rest of the world, the community is left to fend for itself. The elements thrashing the island awkanes a dormant madness in its people. Monsters emerge, led by Jean. They need a scapegoat.
