Pablo Agüero

In the Patagonian village where he grew up, Pablo Agüero shot Primera Nieve (First Snow), which won the Jury Grand Prize in Official Competition at Cannes in 2006, and Salamandra (Directors’ Fortnight 2008), featuring John Cale in his debut acting role.

He later wrote a historical thriller set entirely in a confined setting: Eva Doesn’t Sleep, which won the Grand Prix Sopadin for Best Screenwriter in France in 2013. He first adapted it as a radio play for France Culture, featuring Jeanne Moreau in her final performance. The film, starring Gael García Bernal and Denis Lavant, won 11 nominations and 5 Condor Awards in Argentina.

He went on to direct two documentaries with fictional tones: Mothers of the Gods, with Géraldine Chaplin, and A Son of Man, shot entirely by drone in the Amazon, which represented Ecuador at the 2019 Oscars.

His most recent film, Akelarre, was the most awarded Spanish production at the Goya Awards in 2020 and became the third most-watched film globally on Netflix during its international release.
