The film tells the story of Saint Marguerite Bays, a woman born in the Swiss countryside in 1815. Marguerite is struck by intestinal cancer and condemned to certain death. She miraculously recovers and receives the stigmata and regularly falls into a trance, reliving the Passion of Christ. In a turbulent political context, Marguerite is seen by some as a madwoman, by others as a saint.
