Paris 8

Sélection Annuelle 2020

Alexis, 28, is deeply committed to political activism. He juggles general assemblies at the CGT union, protests, and his job as an adjunct lecturer at Paris 8 University where he’s been assigned a course on the basics of sociological investigation. While the class is meant to have students from Seine-Saint-Denis investigate Paris’s upscale neighbourhoods to raise awareness on class issues, some students begin using these research tools to expose the racism simmering within the university itself. The sudden emergence of race as a topic puts Alexis in a tough spot, especially with a university administration firmly rooted in the values of a “color-blind” Republic.
