Massoud Bakhshi’s film, the new Iranian phenomenon World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2020, is coming to France!

“Yalda, the night of forgiveness” by Massoud Bakhshi, the new Iranian phenomenon, World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance is released in French theatres on October 7, 2020! Massoud Bakhshi came to work on his screenplay in Brittany, at Le Groupe Ouest. The film is supported by the Breizh Film Fund, the endowment fund created by Le Groupe Ouest.

“I joined the Annual Selection with a first version that was not quite finished. I reworked on the fundamentals of the story and found a new structure. It’s the result of my time in Brignogan (Brittany). Here things are changing drastically, in a good way. We are far from daily worries: when you live in Teheran, a city of more than 15 million inhabitants, you are here in paradise where land, sea and sky come together. This is the opportunity to be able to analyse and criticize the story with hindsight and distance, to have a new vision of the story. As that had changed a lot for the first, again for this second feature film, the story becomes much more complex and evolves.” — Massoud Bakhshi

This story, based on real events, takes place in Iran today. Maryam (22) accidentally kills her husband Nasser (65) and is sentenced to death. The only person who can save her is Mona, Nasser’s daughter. All Mona has to do is appear on a popular live TV show and forgive Maryam.

Massoud, Le Groupe Ouest’s team is extremely proud to have been on your side on this adventure. What a strong film, of rare intensity, a great victory!

The film is produced by JBA Production, co-produced with Tita B (Douarnenez), Niko Film, Close Up Films, AMOUR FOU Luxembourg, Shortcut Films, as well as Ali Mosaffa Productions, and distributed by Pyramide distribution.
