Bigoudène

Sélection Annuelle 2012

Brittany, Pays Bigouden, early 20th century.

Every morning, the old and blind embroiderer Laouig Jegu goes to pray at his village chapel accompanied by his sister. After making the sign of the cross at the holy water font, something astonishing happens. The holy water is tinted with red : he bears the stigmata of Christ!  A miracle? A supernatural phenomenon? The village priest immediately sends word to the highest authorities of the Church, and an investigator, Mathieu Orfila, is dispatched by the Vatican. Marie, the priest’s young housemaid, assists him in the inquiry. Miracle? Deception? The truth may be even more surprising.
