The feature film of the Belgian filmmaker awarded in Cannes Film Festival

Among the films selected for the Official Selection of the 75th Cannes Film Festival, CLOSE by Lukas Dhont, co-written with Angelo Tijssens. Lukas participated in Le Groupe Ouest’s Annual Selection, in Plounéour-Brignogan (Brittany, France), for the development of this second feature film.

On May 28, 2022, he won the Grand Prix for CLOSE (ex-aequo with Claire Denis’ STARS AT NOON). What a pride, a big bravo to the all team!

Lukas dedicated his award to his lost friends […] Too often we stand at a distance from those we would like to protect. I wanted to make a film about tenderness. I am aware that we are more used to filming men fighting rather than supporting each other, but fragility can be a superpower.”

In 2016, Lukas was selected by the Cinéfondation Residence in Cannes to develop the screenplay of his first feature film, GIRL. This film closely illustrates a number of themes explored by the director, such as dance, transformation and identity. Presented in World Premiere at 2018 Cannes Film FestivalUn certain regard section, GIRL won the Golden Camera for Best First Film.

In CLOSE, Lukas Dhont describes the merging friendship between two thirteen-year-old boys, Leo and Remi, suddenly disturbed by their transition to adolescence. Trying to understand what happened, Leo seeks comfort by getting closer to Remi’s mother, Sophie. A journey of forgiveness, vulnerability and love.
