The feature film by Argentinian Pablo Agüero awarded in 5 categories at the Premios Goya!

On March, 6th 2021, “Akelarre” by Pablo Agüero, co-written with Katell Guillou, was awarded with the following Goya (Spain’s main national annual film awards): best decors (Mikel Serrano), best costumes (Nerea Torrijos), best hair & makeup (Ricardo Molina & Beata Wojtowicz), best special effects (Mariano García & Jon Serrano) and best original music (Maite Arrotajauregi & Aránzazu Calleja).

“Akelarre” (titled “Coven”in English) is the third most watched film on Netflix in the world! The film stayed in cinemas in Spain for 23 weeks – for several weeks it was the most seen film in cinemas in the Basque Country and Navarre. Streamed since March 11, 2021, it is number one on Netflix in Spain, in several Latin American countries and some European countries. It is the first film in Basque language to appear first on Netflix. In France, the rights have not been transferred to Netflix, in order to preserve an exclusive release in cinemas – which we hope very soon…!

This feature film, shot in Basque Country, is inspired by an authentic witchcraft affair that took place in the 17th century. The men of the region are at sea. Ana, 17, takes part for the first time in a party in the woods, at night, with others village girls. At dawn, they are arrested. Judge Rosteguy given the task of purifying the region by the King, arrests the women and accuses them of witchcraft. Sure, that he has found his greatest affair here, he decides to do what it takes to make them confess what they know about the Akelarre, a ceremony with magical connotations during which the Devil is said to initiate his servants and mate with them. Savage and cunning, Ana will at first resist the judge before gradually getting into his game…

“Akelarre” is a Spanish-French-Argentinean co-production gathering Sorgin Films, Tita B, Campo Cine and La Fidèle Production. It will be distributed in France by Sophie Dulac Distribution. The film was developed as part of the Annual Selection & the Cross Channel Film Lab, and was one of the Talents of LA SÉLECTION, an annual event co-created by Le Groupe Ouest & the Gan Foundation for Cinema.
